The Bluetooth Mesh radio standard in buildings

Smart Installation Using Bluetooth Mesh: STEINEL System Components

When renovating or modernizing, electricians are often faced with the task of adapting existing building installations to today’s requirements – referably without additional cable routing and construction work. STEINEL’s Professional Line offers a solution for this: components with Bluetooth Mesh technology.

The modules provide classic bus functionality via radio. This allows existing installations to be modernized quickly, cleanly, and flexibly. The Bluetooth® Mesh wireless protocol ensures that signals are reliably distributed over long distances in the building. Each component acts as a node in the network and contributes to greater stability and range. This achieves similar functionality to wired solutions – but without having to lay new cables.

Relay REL5A-Bluetooth Switch

An essential part of the product line is the REL5A-Bluetooth relay. It can be used to integrate switched loads into a Bluetooth mesh system. Thanks to its compact dimensions (20 × 46 × 45 millimeters), the module is suitable for installation in standard flush-mounted boxes. The relay offers a maximum switching capacity of 1000 watts at 230 volts for incandescent or halogen lamps. Alternatively, up to 50 LED lamps with a total output of 300 watts can be switched. This makes the REL5A Bluetooth a universal interface for different lighting scenarios in buildings.

Button Coupler PC4-Bluetooth

The PC4 Bluetooth push button coupler is the second component that complements the system. It is also installed in a flush-mounted box and allows up to four conventional standard push buttons to be connected. This makes it easy to integrate existing control elements into the Bluetooth Mesh without having to replace switches or frames. The result is a flexible solution that allows classic switching points to be used to control Bluetooth lights or other components.

Both the REL5A Bluetooth relay and the PC4 Bluetooth push-button coupler are set up via the STEINEL Connect app. Control is carried out directly from the smartphone via radio. The app offers functions such as setting switching times, group networking, and configuring main and basic light levels.
